Campaigns
A campaign is a one-off email to the subscribers of a list: a newsletter, a launch announcement, a holiday sale. Send it now or schedule it.
Create a campaign
Open Campaigns › New campaign. A campaign has:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Name | Internal, not shown to recipients |
| List | Required. The campaign goes to its subscribers |
| Segment | Optional. Narrows the list: Everyone on the list by default |
| Subject | The subject line |
| Preview text | The line most inboxes show after the subject |
| Sender and reply-to | Default sender of the space unless you change it. The address must use a verified domain |
| Content | Written in the editor. Writing emails |
The campaign is saved as a Draft while you work on it.
Who receives it
A contact receives the campaign if they are:
- subscribed to the list (not pending, not unsubscribed);
- Active: not unsubscribed from everything, not bounced, not complained;
- not on your suppression list;
- matching the segment, if you picked one.
The Audience panel shows how many contacts would receive the campaign right now. If contacts under review will be held back this time, it says how many. Contacts under review.
Each contact receives the campaign once. The audience is computed when sending starts, so people who subscribe before then are included.
Test before sending
Click Send test to send the campaign as it is now to up to 5 addresses. The subject starts with [Test], links are not tracked, and test emails count in your monthly usage like any email.
Variables are filled with the data of the matching contact when the address is in your space, and left empty otherwise. Use fallbacks like {{ contact.first_name | default: "there" }}.
Send or schedule
Click Send now, or Schedule and pick a date and time, in the timezone of your space (Settings › General).
Before sending, Kula checks that the campaign has a subject, content, a list and a sender on a verified domain.
The emails then leave progressively:
- on a new domain, the daily warm-up budget applies, and the rest goes out the next days;
- if the space has a Daily marketing limit in Settings › General, it applies too.
Statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | Being written. Editable |
| Pending approval | Prepared by an AI assistant or the API, waiting for a person to approve it |
| Scheduled | Will start sending at its date. Editing it puts it back to draft: schedule it again after your changes |
| Sending | Emails are leaving. The content can no longer change |
| Sent | Every email has left |
| Cancelled | Stopped before the end |
| Failed | Could not start. The page shows why |
Campaigns prepared by AI
An AI assistant never sends a campaign. It writes a draft, then asks for approval: the campaign becomes Pending approval and every member receives an email.
Open the campaign, review it, then click Approve and send now (or Approve and schedule if a date was proposed), or Reject to send it back to draft. AI assistant.
Cancel a campaign
Cancel campaign stops a scheduled or sending campaign. Emails still waiting in the queue are cancelled. Those already handed to the mailbox providers cannot be called back.
Duplicate a campaign
Duplicate creates a draft copy with the same content, list, segment and sender.
Only drafts can be deleted. Sent campaigns stay, with their report.
The report
The report fills in as emails are delivered, opened and clicked:
- Delivered, Opened, Clicked and Unsubscribed, with their rates;
- bounces, complaints, failed and suppressed emails, and the contacts held back by the import review;
- Top links: clicks and unique clicks per link;
- By mailbox provider: delivery, opens and clicks for Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and the others;
- Opens, first 48 hours: unique opens per hour.
