Billing

Plans, what counts as an email, prepaid credit, limits and invoices

Kula charges for the emails you send, never for the size of your list. Contacts, members and lists are unlimited on every plan. Prices are in US dollars. See the pricing page for the calculator.

Billing is managed by owners, in Account › Usage & billing.

What counts as an email

One email sent to one recipient counts as one, whatever its type: campaigns, flow emails, transactional emails, double opt-in confirmations and test emails. An email that bounces counts, because it was sent.

What doesn't count:

  • emails to suppressed addresses, which Kula doesn't send;
  • emails held back by the warm-up or the import review until they leave;
  • your contacts, however many you have.

The month is the calendar month, in UTC. Usage adds up every space of the account. Usage this month shows the total, the split by space and the last 30 days.

Upgrading

Click Upgrade and pay through our payment provider. The Starter plan applies at once: emails already sent this month on the free plan aren't billed.

Credit for emails past the included ones

Emails beyond the 15,000 included each month are paid in advance from a credit balance, at $1.00 per 1,000 emails.

  • Add $10 credit tops up the balance. Each $10 pays for 10,000 emails.
  • Low credit alert: owners receive an email when the credit falls below the amount you set. Leave it empty to turn the alert off.
  • Automatic top-up when the credit runs low is coming. Contact support to turn it on now.

When the included emails are used up and the credit runs out, all sending stops, transactional included, until you add credit. Emails already queued leave first as soon as credit is added. New sends are refused in the meantime, and the API answers 402 quota_exceeded.

On the free plan, sending stops at 3,000 emails for the rest of the month, transactional included, and the API answers 402 quota_exceeded. Emails already queued wait for the next month, or leave as soon as you upgrade.

Monthly safety limit

Against runaway integrations, a new paid account can send up to 65,000 emails a month (15,000 included plus 50,000 more). The extra allowance doubles with each paid month: 100,000, then 200,000, and so on. If you need more sooner, contact support.

Failed payments

If a payment fails, campaigns and flows stop at once and transactional emails stop 7 days later. Update your payment method from Manage billing: sending resumes when the payment goes through.

Invoices and payment method

Manage billing opens the billing portal of our payment provider, Creem, where you update your card and download invoices. Creem is the merchant of record: it bills you, handles VAT and issues compliant invoices.

Cancelling

Click Cancel plan in Account › Usage & billing. The plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for, then the account moves to the free plan. Your spaces, contacts and history stay. Spaces beyond the first are kept, but you can't create new ones.
