Lists
A list is something people choose to receive: "Newsletter", "Product updates", "Events in Paris". Every campaign goes to a list, and every unsubscribe link leaves a list. Create one list for each kind of email you send, so readers can keep what they want and drop the rest.
Lists and segments
A list answers "who agreed to receive this?". A segment answers "who among them do I want to reach this time?".
A campaign always targets a list, then optionally narrows it with a segment. A segment never adds anyone to an audience: consent stays with the list. Segments.
Create a list
Open Lists › New list and give it:
- a name, shown to your contacts on the preferences page;
- a description, optional, also shown on the preferences page;
- a visibility: Public or Private.
| Visibility | On the preferences page |
|---|---|
| Public | Shown with a checkbox: contacts can join and leave it themselves |
| Private | Hidden. Use it for lists you fill yourself, such as "Beta testers" or "Customers" |
A contact can always leave a private list through the unsubscribe link of an email sent to it, or with "Unsubscribe from all". Unsubscribe and preferences.
Subscription status
Each contact has a subscription status per list:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Subscribed | Receives the campaigns and flows of this list |
| Pending | Waiting for the contact to click the link in the confirmation email |
| Unsubscribed | Left the list. Kept so that nobody subscribes them again by mistake |
The Lists page shows the number of subscribed, pending and unsubscribed contacts of each list.
Double opt-in
With double opt-in, a new subscriber first receives a confirmation email and is subscribed only after clicking its link. It proves the address is real and belongs to the person who typed it, which keeps typos and fake signups out of your list.
- Signup forms use double opt-in by default. You can turn it off per form.
- The API subscribes directly unless you send
doubleOptIn: true. - Imports never send a confirmation email: only import people who already agreed.
The confirmation email is sent from the default sender of the space, with a link on your own tracking domain. If the same person signs up again, Kula sends at most one confirmation every 15 minutes.
Someone who had unsubscribed and fills a signup form again always receives a confirmation email, even if the form uses single opt-in. Nobody can be put back on a list with only their address.
Lists and flows
A flow can start when a contact subscribes to a list: the welcome sequence of your newsletter, for example. Only confirmed subscriptions start a flow, and imports never do. Flows.
Delete a list
Deleting a list removes the subscriptions, not the contacts: they stay in your space with their other lists. A list used by a scheduled or sending campaign, or that triggers an active flow, cannot be deleted until the campaign is done or the flow is paused.
